Reaching into the schools, Making Murals was a New Haven public, private,
and parochial schools arts collaborative project which has encouraged children
to draw pictures which become part of the museum's exhibits.
Working with kindergarten
teachers and their classes, we provided art materials and mural themes and invited
children to submit their drawings. Museum muralists have incorporated the children's
art into the murals for each program room. Using the very tall walls of the
museum as their canvas, artists painted a meadow in silhouette, a full-color
construction site, giant trees from around the world, optical illusions, city
park scenes, a New Haven cityscape "dollhouse" in detail, musical
instruments in profile and a huge globe, all including children's art.
The museum walls became a canvas for a broad community of artists.
